Discovering America through bed and breakfasts has become a hobby for many travelers, couples and families. Spending a few nights at B&Bs in historic and unique cities and towns allows guests not only to take part in a great lodging experience, but also to get a taste of how the B&B property and surrounding area melded together years ago to build something special.
Here's a listing of some of the best B&Bs across the US that bring the story of their region into their inn which gives guests a unique opportunity to learn about the past.
Golden Lamb
Ohio has a unique connection to the development of the United States, having played a big part in the Civil War, the industrial revolution and of course the 2004 presidential election. And the oldest hotel in Ohio (the Golden Lamb in Lebanon) has survived it all. Built in 1803, an amazing 12 presidents have visited the Golden Lamb. A number of Civil War battlefields are nearby to visit and learn more about the development of our country. For a connection to today's culture, the inn is central to a few annual festivals, including the Sauerkraut Festival.
Heceta Lighthouse B&B
Maybe the most unique bed and breakfast on the list is the one out in Yachats, Oregon. As the name says, the Heceta Lighthouse B&B is part of an actual lighthouse. And not just any lighthouse - allegedly it is the most photographed one in the US. The Heceta Lighthouse is part of a string of majestic Oregon lighthouses that are beautiful whether viewed by land, sea or air. Built in 1894, each room provides breathtaking views of the area, which is primarily graced with the ocean, cliffs and sky. A nice day trip away from the B&B is to cruise along the Oregon Coast Highway and take note of all the uniquely designed bridges along the way.
The Mill House Inn
Summer in the Hampton's. It's a phrase that many New Yorkers and northeasterners here and use, but most can only dream of the lavish lifestyle that this phrase brings to the imagination. Once way to live this lifestyle, if only for a few days, is to visit The Mill House Inn. Residing in East Hampton, New York, this is one of the best places to stay in the area. With a great location within walking distance of everything, including beaches and nature trails, this B&B allows guests to live the high-life if only for a weekend. Nearby restaurants serve fresh, local seafood. And because it's Long Island, guests are never far away from history, whether in the form of a plantation, museum or monument.
The Williamsburg Sampler Bed & Breakfast Inn
Located in historic Williamsburg, this B&B not only rests in the middle of one of America's most historic towns, it also captures the spirit of colonial times and showcases antiques from around the world. And even though the bed & breakfast is relatively new (built in the year of our bicentennial), because of its design as an 18th century plantation style inn by a popular architect from colonial Williamsburg, The Williamsburg Sampler B&B Inn's look and feel takes you back to the historic days of the 1700's.
Federal House Inn
When you say Plymouth and history, most people will start to think of the coast of Massachusetts. But Plymouth, New Hampshire has quite a past to offer visitors to the state north of the Commonwealth. That includes the Federal House Inn. Built in 1835 as a home for John Adams (yes, that John Adams), this bed and breakfast gives guests the experience of staying right where a past president once lived. For another piece of history visit what is now the Historical Society in Plymouth - this is where Daniel Webster once practiced law.
Cotton Mansion
Most people don't remember that Duluth, Minnesota used to be home to some of the wealthiest communities in America. The early 1900's brought Duluth their 'Grand Era,' as it was home to multiple industries, including cargo, where Duluth became the United States' leading port town. That's where the Cotton Mansion comes in. Erected in 1908, this bed and breakfast is one of the remaining buildings from the heyday of Duluth and showcases the architecture and culture from that time period. While staying at the Mansion, one can also visit the Glensheen Historic Estate and the unique Aerial Lift Bridge to see some other structures that make the people of Duluth proud.
Frisco Lodge
Some may think that a bed and breakfast in a small Colorado town like Frisco doesn't sound too exciting. But once they hear that it was built in 1885 as an old stagecoach stop, and is in the middle of the Rockies and all their wonder their minds change. With a unique story to tell its guests, and minutes from all the natural wonders of the area (including fishing, cycling and hiking), The Frisco Lodge is definitely worth tasking the time to visit. You'll learn the deep roots the town has, including a rebirth in the 20th century built upon national engineering projects like the Eisenhower Tunnel and the development of Lake Dillon.
The Carlisle House
Pennsylvania has been home to some of the most notable happenings in US history. And The Carlisle House brings a taste of Pennsylvania culture into its downtown Carlisle B&B. Built way back in the 1700's, The Carlisle House has stood the test of time by not succumbing to the pressures to transform into private housing or offices. History buffs will love the location, too, within a short drive to Gettysburg and Pennsylvania Amish Country.
John Rutledge House Inn
As if winning many major awards and recognition, including being one of the top 100 hotels in all of America, isn't enough to get you thinking of visiting the John Rutledge House Inn, its romance and relationship with the community just might. Located in wonderful Charleston, South Carolina, this bed and breakfast was built for and is named after one of the signers of the US Constitution in 1763.
